Calvary Cemetery History
The cemetery was 1st owned by Mr. & Mrs. Gilbert Hatheway who conveyed $263.00 to the “Oakland Cemetery Association on July 16th, 1880.
On January 3rd, 1881, the Oakland Cemetery Association sold it for $300.00 to John Lancaster Spalding-Catholic Bishop. At that time 6 graves sold for $10.00. In 1959, 6 graves sold for $60.00.
From 1877 to 1881 William Kuckenbach was in charge of the parish at that time frame.

We have a financial statement for church for 1920, it did not list a cemetery board. 1st Financial Report that lists a board was in 1927. The board members were Jas. A. Maher, Chairman, Clinton Day, Treasurer, Anna McDonough, Secretary, P.M. Lynch, Joseph Carroll, Katherine Wyman, and May H. McDonough. Receipts for that year were 1,362.71 and $1,362.71 expenditures for crucifix, the iron fence, drainage, grading new section, and surveying.
The 1st burial in cemetery was Freddie Leo Lynch 11months in 7-17-1878, but the 1st burial after formation was in 1881 Rosanna Morgan 84 yrs. (8-12-797 to 4-8-1881) B1-L3. |
Plotted Grave are 1818, potential un-plotted graves are 504. The approximate number currently interred is 674. The approximate number of graves available for sale is 289. We currently have approximately 3-5 burials a year.
Cemetery Dimensions + 2 Acres. The Fuch donation (south side of Driveway) was blessed by Father Nickerson on 4-29-1969.

Travis Kelch designed and built with assistance for his Eagle Scout Project at the Cemetery. It is a Grotto with a Statute, with lattice around and on top. There are two planters on each side of statute. There is a bench to sit on in front of the Grotto. It was completed in June 2009. Both were dedicated on Memorial Day 2010 by Father John Verrier at the Cemetery.
In 2012-15, Cemetery experienced vandalism, the Board Voted to purchase a 3-G camera and a regular to monitor activity, and signs. In 2016, Travis Kelch is again designing a Grotto possibly to be completed in 2016.
